"Okay look....let's take one of the oldest and most trusted brands of Jeep in the world...and put the biggest engine in it we can fit!"
And it was so.

Following the great muscle car tradition, Jeep took their fairly sedate Grand Cherokee that has been around since 1993 and put a 470 horsepower, 465 foot pounds of torque, 6.4 L Hemi V8 engine in it.
Ta-da!
This gave Jeep an SUV that could go from standing still to 60 miles per hour in 4.5 seconds and blast through the quarter mile in 13.1 seconds.
That's pretty darn quick for a 4,261 pound SUV.
Pretty darn quick indeed.
To give you some idea, a Ford F-150 SVT Raptor SuperCab can go from 0 to 60 in 6.6 seconds and turn the quarter in 15.1 seconds.
And it ain't no slouch!

Even with the ground thumping engine it is still able to deliver 17 mpg City and 25 mpg Highway.
And with a larger gas tank in it, Chrysler says that it has a 500 mile range.

The bad news is that this beast retails for around $64,000 maxed out.
But still...for what you are getting, it's really not that bad when compared to some of the others out there.

And it rules.
Until the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT Hellcat comes out.
Then.....

Romney, the father of Mitt Romney.

But in 1969, AMC went a little crazy with this little compact car.
They took the compact car and turned it into a muscle car, the Hurst SC/Rambler, designed by AMC and Hurst Performance.

They took a normal little Rambler and shoehorned a 315 horsepower 390 AMC V8 engine into it, the same engine that came in the AMX.
Then they gave it a T-10 four-speed manual transmission, a Hurst shifter, dual exhaust with Thrush mufflers and a heavy sway bar, plus some more goodies.
This was a factory full on race machine.
No options, just pure speed.
The cost...$2,998.00.
Yep...that’s it.
Even in today's economy, that would be under $20,000 dollars for a dragstrip ready car.

In factory trim, the Hurst SC/Rambler could go 0 to 60 in 6.3 seconds and blast through the quarter mile in 14.4 seconds at 100.44 mph.
When people modified them...they got faster.

By the way...the SC stood for "Super Car".
It's usually Fords, Chevys, Dodges, Pontiac....rarely a Buick.
But Buick made some very good muscle cars.
Like the Buick Gran Sport.

Like most muscle cars, it was based on a car that Buick already had, in this case, the Buick Skylark.
The Skylark was a good, solid family car.

So in 1965, Buick took it and dropped in a 400 inch Buick V8 (that was bored out to 401 inches).
They gave this "family car" 325 horses and 445 foot pounds of torque.
The Buick Gran Sport was born.

The model continued for several years.
But the "Holy Grail" of the Buick Gran Sport was the 1970 Buick GS 455 Stage 1.
This "Skylark" had a 455 cubic inch V8 shoehorned under the hood that put out a rumored 360 to 400+ horsepower.
This baby could turn the quarter mile in a little over 13 seconds at 104 mph.
And it was rumored it could hit 0 to 60 in 6.1 seconds.
That may not sound like a lot these days, but we are talking about a regular street car with a carburetor.
It wasn’t fuel-injected and it wasn’t all fiberglass, it was metal.

Today, if you are lucky, you can get a 1970 Buick GS with the 455 for $37,176 at an auction.

The AMC Rebel (known as the Rambler Rebel in 1967) was an mid-size car produced by American Motors Corporation (AMC) from 1967 to 1970. It replaced the Rambler Classic. The Rebel was replaced by the similar AMC Matador for the 1971 model year.

The Rebel name was introduced by AMC in 1957 as the first American factory hot-rod. The Rebel name reappeared in 1966 on a specially trimmed version of the Rambler Classic two-door hardtop with a revised roofline. For 1967, AMC's entire intermediate line took the Rebel name.

Throughout its life, the Rebel was available as a 4-door sedan, 4-door station wagon, and 2-door hardtop. In addition, a 2-door coupe with a thin B-pillar and flip out rear side windows was available in 1967 only, and a convertible was offered in 1967 and 1968. Engines included the 232 in I6 (145/155 hp), 290 in (200/225 hp), 343 in (235/280 hp) and 390 in (315/325 hp) V8s. Styling was similar to the senior Ambassador, which shared the same basic unit body aft of the cowl. In 1970, the sedan and coupe received a restyled rear-end, along with a new C-pillar shape and rear quarters. The Rebel was built at AMC's "West Assembly Line" (along with the Ambassador) in Kenosha, Wisconsin and at Brampton, Ontario, Canada (Bramalea).

The 1970 restyle was to last only one year before a further restyle and renaming the models as the AMC Matador. The 4-door and wagon platform would remain unchanged until the retirement of the Matador after 1978.

During the 1967 model year, AMC issued a series of speciality Rebel station wagons, each with their own distinctive side trim:

The Mariner (600 units) featured simulated grey lapboard trim and was issued along the coastal regions of the United States;
The Briarwood (400 units) featured simulated Rosewood panels and was issued throughout the east and south;
The Westerner (500 units) featured plankwood trim inserts and was issued west of the Mississippi River.

The most recognizable muscle car version of the Rebel was named The Machine, which in its most patriotic or flamboyant form was painted white with bold red, white, and blue reflective stripes following success of the 1969 SC/Rambler. American Motors' high performance car made its official debut October 25, 1969, in Dallas, Texas; the site of the National Hot Rod Association's World Championship Drag Race Finals. The Machine had a 390 in V8 engine with 340 hp (gross), the most powerful in any AMC vehicle. It featured a large ram-air intake hood scoop painted Electric Blue with a large tachometer visible to the driver integrated into a raised fairing at the rear of the scoop. The heavy-duty suspension was augmented by station wagon springs in the rear giving the car a raked look. Standard were a Borg-Warner T-10 four speed transmission with a Hurst shifter backed by either 3.54:1 or 3.91:1 rear axle gear ratios, as well as power disc brakes, wide E60X15 tires mounted on mag-styled steel wheels, and bucket seats with a center armrest upholstered in red, white, and blue vinyl. Numerous other upgrades were standard to make each Machine a potent turn-key drag racer. The manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) price was $3,475 (roughly $20,000 in 2007 dollars). After the initial run of 1000 units, the Machine was available without the stripes in other colors with a blacked out hood; while the original trim scheme became a $75 option. The Rebel Machine was a limited edition, with 2,326 built in 1970.

Also of note is the 1968 convertible, which was the last AMC convertible built (not including the Renault Alliance). This is among the rarest AMC models, with only 823 produced. Less than 100 are known to survive today.
If I ever become a crime-fighter THIS will be my car.
Designed and built by American engineer Randy Grubb, the car is now owned by Jay Leno.
It weighs 9,500 pounds and it is 21 feet long.
BUT...it can pull the quarter mile in 14.7 seconds at 93 mph and has a 140 plus top speed.
Why?
Because it has an 810 horsepower Continental AV1790 tank engine.
Well it started out that way, Jay had fuel injection and twin turbochargers added and now it puts out 1,600 horsepower.
Listed at "only" $250,000, this beauty gets about 5 miles to the gallon.

The Chevrolet Chevelle was introduced in 1964, and the model could be anything from an economy car to a very powerful muscle car.
The Chevelle came with (I think) every engine Chevrolet put out, from the 194 CID Inline-Six to the 454 CID Big-Block V8.
The 1970 Chevelle SS equipped with the LS6 454 V8 was probably the pinnacle of the high performance version.
Right out of the showroom, the 454 put out 450 horsepower and 500 foot pounds of torque.
That pushed the 3260 pound car through the quarter mile in 13.1 seconds at 107 mph.
And like I said, that was stock.

I had a friend growing up that had a SS that he had modified that would almost literally tear up the pavement.
More than once I hit my head on the headliner when he popped the clutch and yanked the front wheels off the ground.

Good times.

The 1963 Dodge Ramcharger.
The Ramcharger (not to be confused with the large sport utility vehicle) came equipped with a 413 V8 bored out to 426 cubic inches.
Dodge rated the engine at 425 horsepower, but as with a lot of figures from back then, a lot of people think the horsepower ran much higher.
Aluminum front fenders, hood and front bumpers helped to lower the weight of the car, bringing it in at around 3,200 pounds.
On the strip this translated into a 12 second quarter mile at 117 mph.

One of the fastest Muscle cars ever made was the 1968 Plymouth S/S Barracuda with the dual 4-barrel carburetor 426 Hemi.
The Hemi put out 525 horsepower (although it was rumored that it was actually 600+ horses) and turned the quarter in 10.5 seconds at 130 mph.
Now this is stock times.
Imagine what a few modifications would do.
Not that there was a lot of need.
Besides coming equipped with the dual 4-barrel 426 Hemi, it also had Competition Hooker headers, exhaust pipes, and mufflers from the factory.
Of course not a lot of these were made.
And when you ordered one of the beasts, you had to sign a disclaimer indicating that you understood the vehicle was sold without warranty and that it didn't conform to Federal Vehicle Safety Standards.
It came from the factory without a heater, outside mirrors or a right side seat belt.
The top of the line Challenger was the R/T powered by the 426 Hemi V8.
The Hemi cost an extra $1,228, but it gave the Challenger 425 horsepower and 490 pounds of torque.
That allowed the Challenger to cover the quarter mile in a little over 13 seconds at 107.12 mph.

A 1970 Challenger was driven by Jake Kowalski in the original "Vanishing Point" movie.

This is the Lamborghini Diamante Concept.
It is a 60th anniversary design study by Thomas Granjard from Coventry University.
The design was his project for his final year of the Automotive Design course at the University.

The proposed car would be powered by four electric motors putting out 800 horsepower with 1600Nm of torque.
With the added kinetic energy recovery system, that would put the Lambo at roughly 965 horsepower.

<img alt="" border="0" height="206" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-vbdp8Mob07U/Ug0vekFP7II/AAAAAAAAzgI/thUF5zkCUeU/s400/1970+Hemi-Powered+Sick+Fish+Cuda.jpg" title="1970 Hemi-Powered "Sick Fish" 'Cuda" width="400" />

Of course Rad Rides totally reworked the whole car, but you know what I pay the most attention to....
Yes the engine.
And what an engine it is.
It's powered by a 650 horsepower, fuel injected,528 cubic inch Mopar Performance crate Hemi.
Enough to make any Mopar fan proud.
Actually they call it a "shooting brake".
And if like me you have no idea what a shooting break is, The New York Times described a shooting-brake as "a sleek wagon with two doors and sports-car panache, its image entangled with European aristocracy, fox hunts and baying hounds,".
Got that?

Actually it kinda reminds me of the Corvette Nomad I had on my Muscle Car blog.
This baby was modified by German coachbuilder Gunter Artz and had a 2.0-litre slant four with 170bhp and 181lb ft of torque.SabrebIadehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00694883990796225494noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3222647841607674046.post-31462792164076766832009-06-03T10:19:00.001-05:002016-02-26T14:04:42.958-05:00Mercedes-Benz SLK32 AMG

The Mercedes-Benz SLK32 AMG was one of the fastest Mercedes ever built.
The SLK32 AMG was powered by a 3.2 liter 354 hp V6 engine.
All of the SLK's engines were hand-built by AMG engineers.
The 3.2 liter engine was equipped with an intercooled Lysholm-type "twin-screw" supercharger.
That allowed the V6 to propel the SLK32 from 0 to 60 in around 4.5 seconds and gave it a quarter mile time of 13 seconds at 105 mph.
Even thought it was only offered with automatic transmission, the SLK was competition for the BMW M Roadster and Porsche Boxster S.
The base price of the SLK was around $56,115.
And the performance is staggering.
This luxury car has a 6.0L W12 twin-turbocharged engine rated at 621 horsepower and it puts out 590 foot pounds of torque.

The GT can pull 0 to 60 in just 3.7 seconds, 0 to 100 in 8.9 seconds and has a top speed of 204 mph.
The power comes at a price in more ways than one.
MPG in the city is 11.5 and highway is 24.4.
I don't know if that's cruising at 200 mph plus or not.

So Go Green!
Save the Earth!
Turn 0 to 60 times in 3.7 seconds and cruise at 200 plus mph!
And you only have to pay $267,000 (base price) to do it!

The Ferrari Testarossa F512 M is a 12-cylinder mid-engine sports car manufactured by Ferrari.
The F512 M was powered by a 4.9 litre (302 cubic inches) Ferrari Colombo Flat-12 engine.
BTW, the name Testarossa means "red head" in Italian and the car was named that because the cam covers were painted red.
Of course it has a double meaning because Ferrari regularly uses terms related to a female's body when describing the style of their automobiles.
You have to love the Italians!

Anyway, the Flat-12 engine puts out 440 horsepower and 406 foot pounds of torque.
That allows the F512 M go from 0-60 in 4.8 seconds, 0-100 in 10.2 seconds and cover the quarter mile in 12.7 seconds at 112 mph.
The maximum speed of the F512 M is 196 mph.
In 1995, the F512 M retailed for $220,000.

I did a write up on the Aston Martin V12 Vanquish back in 2007 in relation to the James Bond movie "Die Another Day"
But here is the real world Vanquish.

In 1998, a GT concept car, the Project Vantage, debuted at the North American International Auto Show.
The Vanquish was based on that car.
But the Vanquish S is the real barnstormer.
The Vanquish is powered by a a 5.9 liter 48-valve 60° V12 engine, which puts out 514 horsepower and 425 ft·lbs of torque.
That gave the Vanquish a 0 to 60 time of about 4 seconds and a top speed in the 190-204 mph range.
The base price was around $250,000.

And if that's not enough, Top Speed is reporting the new 2010 Vanquish S may be putting out 550 mph.
The BMW E60 M5

The BMW E60 M5 is powered by a 305.1 cu in BMW V10 S85 engine.
The massive V-10 under the hood puts out 500 horsepower and 384 foot pounds of torque.
The V-10 allows the E60 to go from 0 to 60 in about 4.1 seconds.
And it gives it a 0-100 time of 10.1 seconds.
It can run a top speed of 155 mph with the electronic speed limiter on, or 193 with the limiter removed.

And if that's not enough for you, German aftermarket tuner G-Power has produced the "G-Power Hurricane M5".
This twin-supercharged BMW packs 730 horsepower and has a top end of 225 mph.

Launched in 2000, the Ferrari 360 Spider is powered by a mid-mounted 3.6 liter V8 with 400 horsepower, shown off under a glass hood.
This engine allows the Spider to pull a 12.8 second quarter mile at 110.8 miles per hour.
And it gives the Spider a 0 to 60 time of about 4.5 seconds with a top speed of 185 mph.
The Ferrari's fuel economy is 10 mpg city, 16 mpg highway.

I actually found a place where you can rent one online.
How cool is that?

And if renting isn't your style, you can pick one up starting at around $221,720.00.

The Ferrari Challenge Stradale is a variation of the Ferrari 360 Modena.
When the car was created, the designers were thinking 20% track use in mind and 80% road use.
And it shows in the performance.
The Challenge Stradale's 90° F131 V8 engine only puts out about 25 more horses (425) than the Modena, but the car is lighter, giving it a superior power to weight ratio.
It has a 0 to 62 mph time of just 4.1 seconds with a top speed of 183 mph.
(Although the 2008 version is said to pull 0-60 in 3.9 seconds)
The Stradale can pull the quarter mile in about 12.5 seconds at 114.1 mph.
